There is an inextricable link between the perspective of human engagement and the development of interactive sensory technologies. This synthesis challenges the advancement of exploratory media to form new modes of representation and functions as one of the many implicit links merging art and science into my work. What one experiences with the senses alone is not inclusive, but rather exclusive. My self-directed studies in physics, optics, and electronics have largely taken place outside of an institutional setting. These studies are derived from an integrated self discipline developed as a highly intricate part of my process, and the interdisciplinary act in realizing new perspectives. Working from conceptual need through to finished product, I am in the unique position of developing and using emerging technology in my respective fields. In designing and manufacturing the components (tools and machines necessary for production) through to the construction, application, and ultimate use of these tools, I have had to engage in the process of creative play and invention, which not only lends to innovation, but is the forefront of discovery. Working in this way has given me a unique perspective in the manipulation of physics, optics, math, and computing. While my independent practice has been a relevant and fertile ground on which to work, there is a constant and ever growing desire to challenge creative process through dialogue. There is a larger responsibility to creation than personal gain, and having an opportunity to work as a peer engaging in and creating emerging technologies is not only where I wish to be, but where a larger sense of responsibility has lead. This is a conversation to which I give myself fully, as a dedicated and self-directed researcher with a variety of professions from which to draw creative and technical insights. In regard to long-term professional goals, I have already found my path in invention and discovery, although I do not believe I have realized the extent of my abilities; MIT offers the environment to actuate a great deal of furthered exploration at a level I am prepared to engage. My ideas have driven me to technological needs that far exceed the current environment and material with which I have access. Choosing an institutional setting, at this point in my career, will allow me to gain the most from working closely with the faculty and resources of MIT. |
